I could probably hold an entire lecture about this place, where I've never been!
Masanga is a small village in the heart of Sierra Leone, West Africa. Here lies a hospital, that has been rebuilt by a Danish doctor, Peter Bo, and a lot of volunteers, after the civil war that ended in 2002.
Masanga Hospital will be my base during the almost five months I'm there. Here I will teach and supervise the staff and from here I will go to health clinics in the district and teach the local staff.
Beeing a member of the IMCC Masanga group for a year, makes me feel like I know Masanga and the all the nice people there.
It's obviously an illusion, I know. But it is wonderful to have this kind of understanding for the place, where I will soon be working!
I'm so curious about how everything looks in real life… and feels, smells and sounds. I wonder how the Sierra Leoneans really are, can I even understand their English - I found it hard to understand, when watching some video clips.
I'm also curious how the project gets underway as I, with my travel companion Marieke, must start the project from scratch. This means that we must take care to create a good relation with clinics, that we are to visit. I understand that one can never expect to actually have an agreement, even though you have called to verify this same agreement several times before the visit. That will certainly be a challenge.
By the way, christmas is soon here! I really felt the spirit after a couple of great concerts with my choir, TakeNote. And of course because of all the lovely (yet tideous) snow everywhere :) I´m done shopping the presents, almost anyway. Now I just need to finish a paper, then I'm off to Sierra Leone!
See you next summer :)
In the meantime, stay tuned here on my blog!
